"Rome is Burning" but NYS Passed Hug a Sheep Day

Hug-A- Sheep Day | Modern Farmer

Amid the crush of a financial crisis, a crime crisis, and an illegal immigrant crisis the New York State Legislature and the Governor took the time to create a series of resolutions creating “Commemorative Days” for New York.

We all like a good Hallmark holiday and even a funny one, so what does New York State have planned for us?

Coming up soon is Onion Appreciation Day on August 21st, “the official commencement date of the onion harvest season in this great Empire State” says the resolution. Onions, they say, “have numerous medicinal purposes, some of which include the treatment of coughs, colds, wounds, ulcers, and hypertension."

Did you know you can clean a barbecue grill with an onion? Or that onions can grow your hair back? Onions can also boost your libido!

Next up is New York Sneakers Day on October 9th, which coincides with National Sneakers Day. It is meant to increase awareness of American-made products. In case you didn’t already know, the bill says sneakers “are shoes designed for use in sports or for other types of physical exercise, but are often also used as an informal shoe for everyday use”. An interesting fact for your next game of trivia - KEDS were the first US sneaker 131 years ago.

Hug a Sheep Day comes on October 26th. Who doesn’t like a nice, wooly sheep? Hug a Sheep Day is a unique celebration that brings people closer to these fluffy, lovable farm animals, says NY. Despite the old wives’ tale that sheep can’t swim, they are actually pretty good at it. Sheep are also immune to snake venom. Find a farm near you on October 26th and cuddle with your favorite sheep!

You won’t want to miss, or maybe you will, Chucks-N-Pearls Day on October 28th paying homage to vice-president, and now presidential candidate, Kamala Harris. She is well known for her Converse sneakers and pearl necklace look in Vogue and on the campaign trail.

As if Bring Your Kid to Work Day wasn’t interruption enough, Bring Your Parents to Work Day comes up on November 4th. Parents can now watch their grown children drink lattes and make memes all day! The bill says, “Linkedin research found that 35% of parents are not familiar with their children's job responsibilities” and would like to know more about what they do.

Other days in 2024 were Thesaurus Day, Love Your Pet Day, Day of Calm, Mount Everest Day, and Intern Appreciation Day.

If you have an idea for a Commemorative Day for New York in 2025, contact your local Assemblymember or Senator and pitch your idea. Every special day’s resolution is carried by a legislator. Who knows, your idea for "Love My Gas Stove Day" might make it on the list for 2026.
