Suffolk County Executive: Edward P. Romaine (R,C). The four-year position pays $234,124 annually and is limited to three four-year terms. The executive candidates run countywide to become Suffolk’s chief administrative officer responsible for managing various departments and budgets in a county with about 1.5 million people. The job has become available after being held for 12 years by Democrat Steve Bellone, who is term limited.
Suffolk County Legislature
Suffolk County has 18 lawmakers, and they’re all up for election this year to two-year terms. The job, limited to 12 years, comes with an annual base salary of $100,000. The lawmakers form a legislative body responsible for enacting laws, approving budgets, and overseeing public services. Each district includes about 80,000 residents. The incumbent is marked *.
1st District: Catherine L. Stark (R,C). The county’s largest geographically, the district stretches more than seventy miles from Middle Island in Brookhaven Town to the easternmost corner of the North Fork, including the towns of Southold and Riverhead. The winner will succeed Democrat Albert J. Krupski, Jr., who is running for Southold supervisor.
2nd District: Manuel Vilar, Jr. (R,C). The South Fork District includes the towns of Easthampton, Southampton, Shelter Island, and parts of East Moriches and Eastport. The seat is currently held by Democrat Bridget Fleming, who is not seeking reelection.
3rd District: James F. Mazzarella* (R,C).The district covers the south-central portion of Brookhaven, including the Village of Bellport.
4th District: Nicholas J. Caracappa* (R,C). The district encompasses the central section of Brookhaven Town.
5th District: Anthony M. Figliola (R,C). The district is located in the northwest corner of Brookhaven. The seat is presently vacant as its previous occupant, Kara Hahn, took a job with the state Parks Department.
6th District: Chad H. Lennon (R,C). The 6th is located in the northeast corner of Brookhaven. The seat is currently held by Sarah S. Anker, who is term-limited.
7th District: Dominick S. Thorne* (R,C). The district begins on the south shore, centered in Patchogue, and extends north to Middle Country Road.
8th District: Anthony A. Piccirillo* (R,C). The 8th is in the south-central part of Suffolk, almost entirely within the Town of Islip, with a small part located in Brookhaven.
12th District: Leslie A. Kennedy* (R,C). The district is located in the western-central portion of Suffolk, encompassing the southern section of Smithtown and western Brookhaven.
13th District: Robert Trotta* (R,C). The district encompasses the Town of Smithtown and a small portion of Huntington.
Brookhaven Town Supervisor: Daniel J. Panico (R,C). The supervisor is the chief administrative officer for the town, who oversees the various town departments, personnel, and budgets. Elected town-wide, the supervisor leads the town board, which is responsible for zoning, planning, and land use decisions, as well as stewardship over Brookhaven’s waterways and natural resources. The supervisor makes $131,000 annually and is limited to three four-year terms. Panico, currently deputy supervisor, is looking to succeed Supervisor Edward P. Romaine, who is running for county executive.
Brookhaven Superintendent of Highways: Daniel P. Losquadro* (R,C). The highway superintendent is responsible for 3,700 lane-miles of road, including drainage, sidewalks, medians, and intersections, in addition to signage, lighting, drainage, tree trimming and removal, and recharge basin maintenance. Elected town-wide, it’s a four-year position limited to three terms. The job pays $130,762 per year.
Brookhaven Receiver of Taxes: Louis J. Marcoccia* (R,C). The tax receiver is responsible for collecting residential and commercial property taxes for all levels of local government, including the town, county, schools, and special districts. The town-wide position comes with a four-year term and is limited to three terms. It pays $112,800 annually.
Brookhaven Town Council
The council members, along with the supervisor, make up the town board. They are responsible for approving capital and operating budgets, as well as town ordinances and codes. They also function as trustees with authority over town waterways and bay bottoms. They are elected in individual districts to four-year terms, limited to three, and make $76,742 per year. Each council district has about 75,000 residents.
1st District: Gary C. Bodenburg (R,C). The district covers the northwest corner of the town.
2nd District: Jane E. Bonner* (R,C). The district encompasses the northeast corner of Brookhaven.
3rd District: Neil A. Manzella* (R,C). The 3rd covers the central part of the town bordered by Islip.
4th District: Michael A. Loguercio Jr.* (R,C). The district is centrally located in the middle part of Brookhaven.
5th District: Neil Foley* (R,C). The south shore district is bordered by Islip to the west.
6th District: Karen Dunne Kesnig (R,C). The 6th is in Brookhaven’s southeast corner. She is looking to succeed Councilman Panico as he vies for town supervisor.
Smithtown Town Council
The council members approve town ordinances, adopt budgets, manage personnel, and oversee town-wide planning and zoning. They are elected town-wide to four-year terms and are not term limited. Their annual salary is $72,316.
The South Shore Press endorses incumbent council members Lisa M. Inzerillo and Thomas Lohmann, both running on the Republican and Conservative tickets.
The Smithtown Town Clerk is responsible for recording all vital records and the activities of town government, as well as storing documents that are important to the citizens. The clerk serves a four-term term and is paid $100,000 annually for the town-wide position.
We endorse Republican-Conservative Thomas D. McCarthy for Southtown clerk.
As in Brookhaven, the Smithtown receiver of taxes is responsible for collecting commercial and residential property taxes in the town. The position carries a four-year term, and the candidates run town-wide for the $100,000 per year job. We endorse incumbent Deanna Varricchio, who is running on the Republican and Conservative lines.
