Storm Has Its Way With Long Island

The coastal storm that roared across the area Sunday and Monday left a wet mess in its wake with flooding, trees down, and damage to the island’s barrier beach.

“It was certainly a higher impact event than normal for these types of storms,” said Meteorologist Bryan Ramsey out of the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Upton. He reported wind gusts of 65 miles per hour at Calabro Airport in Shirley, with most of the area getting buffeted by gusts in the 50-60 mph range. Rainfall across Suffolk was between 1-2 inches, with many areas seeing inland flooding from the deluge.

Coastal communities took a beating with massive amounts of sand washed out at Davis Park and other areas. The ocean broke through the barrier island in four places, Brookhaven Town officials said.
