Machine learning aids Stony Brook researchers in predicting opioid-related patient outcomes
Two researchers at Stony Brook University are working on using machine learning models to predict patient outcomes. Richard N. Rosenthal, MD, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health in the Renaissance School of Medicine, and Fusheng Wang, PhD, a professor in the departments of Biomedical Informatics and Computer Science, are collaborating on this project. Their research focuses on optimizing predictions related to opioid use disorder and overdose risks.

Golden Goose Award honors Heather Lynch's unconventional research on Antarctic penguins
Heather Lynch, a professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook University, has received the 2024 Golden Goose Award. This accolade is given for unconventional research that results in unexpected and impactful discoveries. Lynch's project, "From Poop to Protection: Satellite Discoveries Help Save Antarctic Penguins and Advance Wildlife Monitoring," funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA, utilized satellite imagery to track penguin populations. This work led to the discovery of 1.5 million previously undocumented Adélie penguins.
Ellen Pikitch receives Lowell Thomas Award for marine conservation efforts
Ellen K. Pikitch, a professor at the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, has been awarded the 2024 Lowell Thomas Award for her contributions to science and communication. This accolade is presented annually by The Explorers Club to recognize excellence in various fields of exploration. Pikitch was nominated by explorer Sylvia Earle.

Student's passion for eye research driven by personal experience
Yuu-U (“Loy”) Hashimoto, a junior majoring in biology with a minor in applied mathematics and statistics, has been named the URECA researcher of the month for October. Since March 2024, she has been working under the mentorship of Eugene Serebryany, an assistant professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. Their research focuses on protein aggregation in the eye lens and explores a potential non-surgical treatment involving myo-inositol, a metabolite found in the human eye lens.
Doctoral student awarded fellowship for research on medical technology security
Veena Krish, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Computer Science, has received the 2024 Turner Dissertation Fellowship Award through the Center for Inclusive Education. This $10,000 award acknowledges Krish’s efforts to address technical challenges and technology’s broader societal implications. Professor Jeff Ge receives prestigious service award from engineering society
Professor Jeff Ge of the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been honored with the Dedicated Service Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). This award recognizes voluntary service to the society and acknowledges "outstanding performance, demonstrated effective leadership, prolonged and committed service, devotion, enthusiasm, and faithfulness." The accolade was presented to Ge during the 2024 ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences held in Washington, DC from August 25 to 28.
Stony Brook's Yi-Xian Qin receives prestigious biomedical engineering award
Yi-Xian Qin, a distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University, has been selected to receive the 2025 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) CMBE Christopher Jacobs Award for Excellence in Leadership. Qin also holds positions as director of the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Research Laboratory and co-director of the Institute for Engineering-Driven Medicine.
Alda Center leader presents communication strategies at NSF advisory committee
Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Communication and Journalism, Laura Lindenfeld, who also serves as the Executive Director of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, was recently invited to present to the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Directorate for the Engineering Advisory Committee by Dr. Susan Marguiles. Marguiles asked Lindenfeld to provide strategies on how the NSF can strengthen communication about engineering.

Two members of the Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) leadership team, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer Carol Gomes and Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Regulatory Officer Carolyn Santora, received 2024 HERALD Excellence in Healthcare Awards. The awards were presented at the third annual ceremony on September 18 at the Heritage Club in Bethpage, NY.
Stony Brook University unveils new Wolfie statue on Academic Mall
Stony Brook University unveiled a new seven-foot-tall statue of its mascot, Wolfie, on September 26 at the Academic Mall. The event attracted a crowd that included Interim President Richard McCormick, the Spirit of Stony Brook Band, and Wolfie himself. The bronze sculpture depicts Wolfie standing behind a bench where students and other members of the community can relax or take photos.
