Marzia Monty, an alumna of Stony Brook University, recently shared her experiences with the Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) program. Her story exemplifies how internships can play a crucial role in shaping one's career path.
Originally from Bangladesh, Monty was drawn to science and math from an early age. Despite a strong family legacy in medicine, Monty’s academic journey took a different turn as she moved to New York, where she was inspired to explore various fields encouraged by her high school mentors.
Monty pursued electrical engineering at Stony Brook University. Her tenure there was enriched by mentorship from professors Leon Shterengas and Michael Guzman, who provided her with valuable opportunities, including teaching assistance and practical lab projects.
Her career path gained clarity through her internship at LSI Computer Systems, facilitated by the SPIR program. The hands-on experience in the semiconductor industry was pivotal, with roles in product testing and layout design broadening her expertise. Monty credits her mentor at LSI, James Smith, with enhancing her understanding of industry dynamics and helping her refine her career aspirations.
Citing the financial independence and team-oriented skills she gained, Monty noted that her time at LSI solidified her decision to pursue a career in industry rather than academia. This trajectory led to further opportunities with Texas Instruments and her current role as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
