Brookhaven Lab hosts summer school for underrepresented STEM students

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory hosted a summer program where 13 students conducted research projects across three key facilities: the Tandem Van de Graaff facility, the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), and the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II). This initiative was part of the inaugural Brookhaven User Facility Summer School, which took place from July 8 to August 2.

New atmospheric observatory opens in Bankhead National Forest

With the support of scientists from U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories, DOE’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility has launched an advanced atmospheric observatory in Alabama's William Bankhead National Forest. The Bankhead National Forest (BNF) observatory officially begins operations on October 1, 2024.

Physicist Xiaoqian Chen receives DOE Early Career Award for quantum materials research

Xiaoqian Chen, a physicist and beamline scientist at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), has been named one of 91 early career scientists to receive research funding from the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science’s Early Career Research Program. This support will aid her in studying quantum mechanics and how particles interact to share information.

Meng Li advances electron microscopy research at Brookhaven National Laboratory

Materials scientist Meng Li is a staff scientist in the Electron Microscopy group at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science user facility at DOE’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, which she joined last year. Li divides her time between assisting users with in situ experiments at CFN’s advanced transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) and conducting her own research. Her interests include in situ TEM studies of corrosion and catalysis and developing new microscopy instrumentation and experimental tools.

DOE announces climate study deployment in Phoenix

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced an upcoming field campaign in Phoenix, Arizona, led by Principal Investigator Allison C. Aiken from DOE’s Los Alamos National Laboratory. The 18-month deployment, named Desert-Urban SysTem IntegratEd AtmospherIc Monsoon (DUSTIEAIM), will study the influence of urban and desert environments on storms and the monsoon around Phoenix.

After five years of virtual-only gatherings, the annual National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) and Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) Users’ Meeting returned as a combined on-site/remote event. Most of the 531 registrants — representing 32 countries and 140 institutions — participated in person. Held May 13-17 at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, the meeting focused on the continued growth and impact of NSLS-II and CFN, which are DOE Office of Science user facilities at Brookhaven.

Experts discuss flood impacts at Climate READi Northeast Regional Workshop

On the heels of a Northeastern rainstorm that flooded towns on Long Island and claimed at least two lives in Connecticut, teams of scientists, engineers, and representatives of local power and transportation utilities met to discuss the increasing frequency of severe weather and its impacts on crucial infrastructure. The timing for the meeting at New York’s Kennedy International Airport on August 21-22, 2024, was coincidental.
