George Santos: Pass the SAVE Act NOW!

The fight over the SAVE America Act has become the defining test of whether Republicans are serious about protecting election integrity or whether they’re content with talking about it while the clock runs out. President Trump has made his position crystal clear. Secure the vote, require proof of citizenship, strengthen voter ID, and restore confidence in our elections. It shouldn’t be controversial. It should be common sense.

Instead, Senate Majority Leader John Thune has been moving at a pace that has frustrated conservatives across the country. Whether it’s caution, Senate procedure, or political calculation, the end result is the same: one of President Trump’s top priorities remains stuck while Americans are demanding action.

The timing couldn’t be more important. Just days ago, the Supreme Court ruled that states may continue counting certain mail-in ballots that are postmarked by Election Day but arrive afterward, reinforcing that states have broad authority over these election procedures unless Congress changes the law.

For supporters of the SAVE America Act, that decision doesn’t weaken the argument for reform. It strengthens it. If ballots can continue arriving after Election Day under state law, then verifying that every person casting a ballot is legally eligible to vote becomes even more important. Americans deserve confidence that every lawful vote counts and that every unlawful vote is prevented.

This isn’t about making it harder for Americans to vote. It’s about making it harder for anyone who isn’t legally entitled to vote to dilute the voice of every lawful voter. Nearly every aspect of modern life requires identification. You need ID to board an airplane, open a bank account, purchase certain products, or enter many government buildings. Protecting the ballot box should be treated with at least the same level of seriousness.

President Trump understands something Washington often forgets: confidence in elections is just as important as the election itself. When Americans believe the rules are fair, transparent, and consistently enforced, faith in our constitutional republic grows stronger.

Republicans now have a choice. They can continue explaining why the Senate process makes action difficult, or they can fight with the urgency this moment demands. Leadership isn’t measured by speeches. It’s measured by results.

The House has already acted. The White House is pushing. Grassroots conservatives are demanding action. Now the Senate must decide whether it will meet the moment.

The SAVE America Act deserves a vote. The American people deserve secure elections. And history will remember who fought to protect them and who was content to wait.
