This past week, it seemed like the entire country caught World Cup fever, and here on Long Island it was no different.
Stony Brook University became the center of the celebration as Empire State Development hosted a free FIFA World Cup watch party at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Soccer fans from across the region gathered on campus to enjoy a day filled with entertainment, community activities and, of course, world-class soccer.
The festivities began with a livestream of the Canada vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina Group B match in the afternoon before fans settled in for the highly anticipated Group D showdown between the United States and Paraguay later that evening.
While the soccer action was the main attraction, there was plenty to keep attendees entertained throughout the day. Award-winning rock band Third Eye Blind delivered a live performance before the United States match, helping create a festival-like atmosphere for fans of all ages.
The Alliance of New York State YMCAs also honored seven local soccer coaches with free World Cup tickets in recognition of their dedication to growing the game at the grassroots level. More than 25 participating organizations, including New York State agencies, local law enforcement groups, youth soccer organizations and community partners, hosted activities throughout the stadium grounds.
Long Island talent was also on full display as the Sachem Flaming Arrows Marching Band performed for the crowd, showcasing one of the region's premier student organizations.
Then came the soccer.
Team USA delivered an impressive performance, defeating Paraguay 4-1 in a result that energized the crowd and sparked excitement for the remainder of the tournament. The Americans controlled possession, created scoring chances and delivered one of the most complete World Cup performances in program history. The four goals scored marked one of the most productive offensive performances ever by the United States on soccer's biggest stage.
The victory only added to the excitement surrounding the event and left fans optimistic about Team USA's chances moving forward.
"Today's event demonstrated the tremendous excitement surrounding the World Cup and the opportunity it presents for communities across New York State," said Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight.
The next New York State United 2026 World Cup Watch Experience is scheduled for July 19 in Westchester County and will feature a livestream of the World Cup Final. Admission will once again be free, though advance registration will be required.
For many Long Islanders, the celebration at LaValle Stadium proved that World Cup fever has officially arrived.
