Students from Eastport-South Manor Jr.-Sr. High School earned high praise and top recognition at the recent SPARK Users’ Meeting poster session held at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where they presented scientific research alongside graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and laboratory professionals.

The annual event brought together researchers from a variety of academic and scientific backgrounds to showcase projects and exchange ideas.

Despite competing among experienced scientists and advanced researchers, Eastport-South Manor students distinguished themselves through the quality and professionalism of their work.

One student research team received a SPARK poster award for its project, “Identification of Microplastics in Lab-Grown Versus Naturally-Sourced Clams in Shinnecock Bay.”

The award-winning team included students Serenity Flaherty, Benjamin Grausso, Matthew Keller and John Palina, who conducted the research under the mentorship of Rachel Neville.

The students’ project focused on examining the presence of microplastics in clams from different environments, an issue that has become increasingly important as scientists study the effects of pollution on marine ecosystems and food sources.

Their findings and presentation impressed attendees throughout the conference, many of whom remarked on the advanced level of work displayed by the high school participants.According to event organizers and attendees, the caliber of the students’ research made it difficult at times to distinguish the high school presentations from those prepared by graduate-level researchers and laboratory staff.

“This recognition highlights the exceptional work, dedication and scientific inquiry demonstrated by our students,” said Director of K-12 Science Jessica Mintz, Ph.D.

“We are incredibly proud of their achievement and the way they represented Eastport-South Manor within the scientific community.”

The recognition marks another accomplishment for Eastport-South Manor’s science program, which continues to provide students with opportunities to engage in hands-on research and collaborate with members of the broader scientific community.

School officials said the students’ success at Brookhaven National Laboratory reflects not only their commitment to scientific exploration, but also the district’s emphasis on encouraging innovation, critical thinking and real-world learning experiences that prepare students for future academic and professional pursuits.
