The William Floyd High School delegation delivered a standout performance at the 90th annual New York State YMCA Youth and Government Conference in Albany, earning top honors and multiple statewide leadership positions.
More than 835 students from across New York participated, representing the executive, legislative and judicial branches in a hands-on simulation of state government. William Floyd students distinguished themselves by capturing nine statewide leadership roles and numerous individual and group awards during the event.
Junior Joyce Chen was elected Governor and will preside over next year’s conference, continuing the school’s remarkable streak of leadership. Erin Chen earned the role of Lieutenant Governor, while Lily Quinn was named Comptroller and Matthew Danielsen became Chief Justice. Christopher Schelhas was selected Public Defender.
In the legislative branch, Gabriel Villacis, Owen Vaughan and Steven Lin were elected Speakers of their respective assemblies, and Madison Spanarelli was chosen President Pro-Tempore of Senate Freedom, further underscoring the delegation’s dominance.
Students also excelled in debate and policy writing. Steven Lin and Michael Henry-Gordon earned Outstanding Debater honors in Assembly Excelsior, while Mars Juno Smothergill and Spanarelli achieved the same distinction in Senate chambers.
Several teams received Outstanding Bill awards, reflecting strong research, collaboration and a deep understanding of public policy issues facing communities.
The program is led by longtime advisor Robert Feeney, who has guided students since 1985, alongside co-advisor Alyssa Tepper. Feeney said the program teaches civic responsibility and prepares students for leadership roles.
Several participants also qualified for national conferences this summer, extending the program’s long tradition of excellence.
William Floyd students have consistently performed at a high level, earning top honors for decades and building a legacy of success.
This year’s results further cement the program’s reputation statewide.
