As the boating season approaches, members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Eastern Long Island Division are reminding residents to prioritize safety before heading out on the water.

In New York State, boating safety education is required for anyone operating a motorized vessel, including personal watercraft such as Jet Skis. Officials say the law ensures boaters understand navigation rules and safe operating practices before leaving the dock.

To help the public prepare, the Coast Guard Auxiliary shared the following safety tips:

  • Take a Boater Safety Course to meet state requirements and learn the rules of the water.
  • Wear a properly fitted life jacket; children under 12 must wear one at all times.
  • Check the weather before departure since conditions can change quickly.
  • File a float plan with a trusted contact so someone knows your location and return time.
  • Carry required safety equipment including distress signals, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, and a sound-producing device.
  • Avoid alcohol while boating because it is illegal and increases the risk of accidents.
  • Schedule a free vessel safety check to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
Auxiliary members say these simple steps can prevent emergencies and make every trip safer and more enjoyable for everyone. They also offer boating safety courses throughout the community and encourage residents to get involved as volunteers.

Officials note that preparation and awareness are key to reducing accidents on local waterways, especially during the busy summer months when boat traffic increases. They urge both new and experienced boaters to review safety practices regularly and remain alert at all times while on the water.

Community outreach efforts aim to educate families and young boaters about responsible recreation and the importance of following safety guidelines every time they depart the dock.
