Fire, EMS Volunteers Honored at Installation Dinners

Installation Ceremonies | Dean Murray and Joe DeStefano

Volunteer first responders were honored for their service and leadership during recent installation dinners held by the North Patchogue Fire Department and the Mastic Beach Ambulance Company, celebrating new officers and longtime dedication to their communities.

The North Patchogue Fire Department marked its 96th Annual Installation Dinner, recognizing decades of commitment from its members. Among those honored were 60-year members Charles Peter Hooker and Thomas C. Washer, whose service reflects the department’s tradition of volunteerism and community pride.

Founded in 1930 when the area was largely pine forest, the department grew from neighbors fighting fires with basic tools into a modern agency serving a growing population with advanced equipment and multiple stations.

Meanwhile, the Mastic Beach Ambulance Company also installed new officers while celebrating its members’ achievements and milestones. Chief Mike Ryan was recognized for 30 years of dedicated service to the Mastic community, highlighting the commitment of volunteer emergency responders across the region.

Established in 1948, the ambulance company serves an approximately 11.8-square-mile area and responds to thousands of calls each year while supporting outreach and youth programs that promote public health and safety.

Together, both organizations emphasized the importance of volunteer service, mentoring, and community engagement, continuing a legacy of neighbors helping neighbors while strengthening trust between residents and first responders for generations to come.

Officials noted that both departments rely on volunteers and encourage residents to get involved through training programs in firefighting, emergency medical services, and youth initiatives that build skills and leadership within the community.

Recruitment efforts remain ongoing, with leaders saying community participation is essential to maintaining strong emergency response services and ensuring that both organizations can continue protecting lives and property throughout the year.

New York State Senator Dean Murray and New York State Assemblyman Joe DeStefano attended, and both praised firefighters and first responders for their selfless service.
