Real Estate Titan Wilbur Breslin Dies at 99

Wilbur Breslin | Breslin Realty

“Wilbur Breslin was a titan of the real estate industry here on Long Island,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico said, reflecting on the life and legacy of the longtime developer. “In every meeting or dealing I ever had with him, he was extremely genuine and cared about what the local community had to say about his proposed plans.”

Breslin, a pioneering real estate developer, philanthropist and trustee emeritus of Hofstra University, died April 1st, 2026 at the age of 99.

Panico noted Breslin’s willingness to work with residents, recalling that in 1973, Breslin and Herbert Carmel purchased what is now the Longwood Estate for development but ultimately donated the historic manor house and 35 acres to the Town of Brookhaven following community opposition.

He also cited Breslin’s decision years later to demolish a former Kmart building in Middle Island at the town’s request.

Hofstra University officials said Breslin maintained a decades-long relationship with the institution, serving 16 years on its Board of Trustees.

His philanthropy led to Breslin Hall and the Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies, supporting future industry leaders.

Born into a family of entrepreneurs, Breslin began working in his father’s fruit markets before founding his first real estate office in 1953. As chairman and CEO of Breslin Realty Development Corp., he helped transform Long Island’s commercial landscape, developing more than 30 retail centers and managing over eight million square feet of commercial space across five states.

Known for innovation and persistence, Breslin helped introduce a significant share of national retailers to Long Island and built a reputation for strong tenant relationships, land development and strategic planning.

The Long Island Builders Institute called him “a true legend,” citing projects including Smith Haven Plaza. Breslin is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and his family.
