The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office marked a significant milestone, as 38 deputy sheriff recruits received their shields during a ceremony at the Yaphank Correctional Facility, just days before their official graduation.

Surrounded by family and friends, the recruits were recognized for completing months of rigorous preparation and for their commitment to public service. The shield ceremony symbolizes their transition from trainees to sworn members of the Sheriff’s Office.

“After months of intensive training, we welcome these 38 men and women who are ready to join our ranks and bring with them the skills, discipline and personal experience that continues to better the Sheriff’s Office,” said Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. “We are proud to embrace these new Deputy Sheriffs as they begin their careers and know they will work hard to do the best job they can for our residents.”

The recruits trained alongside Suffolk County Police Department cadets at the Suffolk County Police Academy, completing a demanding seven-month program. Their instruction included firearms training, emergency vehicle operations, EMT certification and individualized field training designed to prepare them for real-world situations.

Among the 38 new deputies, 19 bring prior law enforcement experience, including service with the New York Police Department and New York State Police. Three recruits have military backgrounds, and six are fluent in more than one language, reflecting the diversity and experience they bring to the force.

During the ceremony, the Suffolk County Police Foundation donated gun lockers to each recruit to ensure their firearms can be securely stored at home.

The recruits are scheduled to officially graduate on Thursday, March 26, during a ceremony at Suffolk County Community College’s Grant Campus, alongside members of other law enforcement agencies.
