Center Moriches FD Celebrates 2026 Installation Dinner

Installation Dinner | Dan Panico

The Center Moriches Fire Department gathered with local officials, families, and community members to celebrate its 2026 Installation Dinner, honoring newly installed officers and recognizing the continued dedication of its volunteer firefighters.

New York State Senator Dean Murray praised the department’s service, stating, “It was an absolute honor to attend the Installation Dinner for the Center Moriches Fire Department with my fellow elected colleagues and friends. Thank you to the dedicated men and women who answer the call day in and day out to keep our community safe. Your courage, commitment, and selfless service do not go unnoticed, and we are truly grateful for everything you do.”

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico highlighted the department’s importance to the community, saying, “The Center Moriches Fire Department is comprised of dedicated and caring people who are the heart and soul of this small community. We celebrated them at their annual installation of officers event, which was marked by another year of selfless heroism in the protection of lives and property for the community.”

The evening also reflected on the department’s long history, which dates back to February 13, 1888, when Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 was organized. Early records from its first years were lost, leaving much of its founding story preserved through the memory of Daniel “Uncle Daniel” Brown, one of its original members. The first meeting took place in Elbert Ruland’s tin shop on Main Street under the leadership of John L. Havens.

In 1889, the department’s first firehouse was constructed entirely through volunteer labor and community support, symbolizing a legacy that continues to guide the department today.
