The Society of Physics Students (SPS) at Stony Brook University has received the 2024-2025 Outstanding Chapter Award from the National Council of Society of Physics Students for the fourth year in a row. The SPS, part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences, was recognized by its parent organization for its achievements during the academic year.
The SPS serves as a professional association for students interested in physics and related fields. It is governed by a national council that provides leadership to more than 800 chapters through the American Institute of Physics.
Each year, SPS Outstanding Chapter Awards are determined after reviewing chapter reports that include information, photos, and supporting materials. A team made up of four members from the SPS National Council, including Zone Councilors and Associate Zone Councilors as well as office staff, evaluates these reports.
Chang Kee Jung, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University, said: “One of the greatest pleasures I have as the chair of the department is seeing a tremendous growth in our undergraduate program that is exemplified by the SPS, which has strengthened our undergrads’ connection to the department, sense of community and research involvement. I find the SPS is super well organized and is always full of positive energy. So, I am not surprised that it is recognized again as an outstanding chapter. Congratulations once again to the SPS members. We are very proud of everything they continue to accomplish!”
James Cross, President of Stony Brook’s SPS chapter, commented: “In line with the national office’s goals, our chapter focuses on fostering interest for physics in undergraduates and the wider community. Recognition from the National Council is an important sign that our efforts are continuing to make a difference and that we’re pulling in the right direction.”
