INDYCAR racing is coming to the nation’s capital under a new presidential order announcing the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a street race planned for Washington, D.C. as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.
In the order, PresidentTrump described INDYCAR as a long-standing American institution, writing, “For over 100 years, American INDYCAR racing has set the pace for motor sports. With speeds topping over 200 miles per hour, the cars and drivers inspire awe and respect in all who watch this quintessentially American sport.”
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix would be the first motor race ever held in the nation’s capital near the National Mall. According to the order, the race is intended to “showcase the majesty of our great city as drivers navigate a track around our iconic national monuments in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.”
The directive instructs the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Transportation to designate a race route within 14 days that is suitable for an INDYCAR street race and highlights prominent areas of Washington, D.C.. Federal agencies are also ordered to expedite permits and approvals needed to stage the event.
President Trump cited the sport’s historical significance, noting that INDYCAR “has given us racing legends such as A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti,” and continues to draw international attention each year at the Indianapolis 500, which he described as “the largest single-day sporting event in the world.”
The order also calls for coordination with the District of Columbia to ensure roads, bridges, and trails used for the race are properly maintained, and allows for aerial photography to enhance public viewing, subject to security requirements.
“INDYCAR racing is a source of pride and entertainment for our Nation,” President Trump wrote, explaining that the Freedom 250 is intended to be a centerpiece event during the America250 celebrations.
