Community Coalition Helps Residents Facing Cancer

Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition | Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition continues to play a vital role in supporting residents facing some of life’s most difficult diagnoses, offering hands-on assistance, education, and compassion to individuals and families impacted by breast and gynecological cancers.

Founded in 1993 by Babylon residents Debbie Basile, Betty Ann Innes, and Pat Smith—two of whom were battling breast cancer themselves—the organization emerged from a determination to confront alarming cancer statistics through awareness, education, and direct action. What began as a grassroots effort to study breast cancer incidence in the community has grown into a dynamic volunteer-driven nonprofit.

Today, the Coalition provides a wide range of services to residents undergoing active treatment for breast or gynecological cancers. Eligible clients may receive assistance designed to ease both emotional and practical burdens, including transportation to and from medical appointments, prepared meals, house cleaning, child care expenses, financial assistance, medical massage therapy, lymphedema treatment, wigs, prostheses, and more. Support is tailored to each individual’s needs, with every effort made to continue services throughout the duration of treatment.

In addition to patient services, the coalition is deeply involved in community outreach, offering educational programs that promote healthier lifestyles and early detection in an effort to reduce the persistently high rates of these cancers locally.

“Our mission has always been twofold,” said Jackie McAleer, the coalition’s office administrator, fundraising and volunteer coordinator. “We want to be there for families when they need help the most, while also educating the community so fewer people have to face this journey in the future.”

The organization also hosts regular fundraising and awareness events, with all funds raised staying within the community to support local patients.

The coalition is hosting a “Super Saturday” Super Bowl party February 7 at Mary Carroll’s in Babylon, as well as its 25th Annual Chefs For A Cause in May. They’re also planning an Annual Golf Classic at Bellport Country Club next fall.

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition is located at 218 North Wellwood Avenue, Suite 2, in Lindenhurst. Residents seeking assistance or more information can call 631-893-4110 or visit www.babylonbreastcancer.org.
