William Floyd United Teachers (WFUT) will hold its third annual 1,000 Coat Giveaway on Saturday, November 15. The event is scheduled to take place at the William Floyd High School west gym starting at 11 am and will continue until all supplies are distributed.
This year’s event aims to provide more than just winter coats. Families attending can also receive hats, gloves, Thanksgiving turkeys with sides, and children can participate in “Santa’s Corner,” where free small gifts and books will be available.
WFUT has exceeded its goal of collecting over 1,000 coats for this year’s giveaway. The effort was supported by teachers, staff, students, local residents, and business sponsors.
“Every year, this event reminds us of the heart and generosity that defines the William Floyd community,” said Kari Garfen, a teacher at William Paca Middle School and WFUT Local Action Committee Chairperson. “It’s incredible to see us all come together to make sure our neighbors are cared for and supported – not just with coats and food, but with kindness and dignity.”
“This event truly shows what’s possible when teachers and the community work hand in hand,” said Mike LaCarrubba, a teacher at William Floyd High School and building-level WFUT Vice President. “Our educators give so much of themselves every day in the classroom, and this partnership allows us to extend that care to beyond the school walls – ensuring our community feels supported and valued during the holiday season.”
The giveaway is open to all members of the William Floyd community. In addition to clothing items such as coats, hats, gloves, scarves, families can also pick up Thanksgiving meal essentials.
The event is made possible through contributions from various organizations including Focus Church; Kevin Donovan from Mutual Inc.; Long Island Public Service Employees Local 342; Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella; Suffolk County Police Department’s 7th Precinct Community Unity; East End Screen Printing; Mitev Law Firm; Feldman, Kramer & Monaco; Katherine Martin from Cetera Investors; Acclaimed Medical Bus; Riverhead Building Supply; Michelle Ferraro’s Dance USA; Book Fairies; AFTs Reading Opens the World; Aflac as well as support from teachers’ union members.
