The Jazz Loft @ Southampton Concert Series will continue its fall season with a performance titled “The Art & Soul of Rhythm & Blues” on Thursday, October 30. The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Avram Theater at Stony Brook Southampton.

Jazz, which originated from the blues, has been an important part of American culture and history. It has evolved by incorporating elements from various genres such as country, swing, gospel, and Latin rhythms. Musicians like Louis Jordan, Dinah Washington, and Billie Holiday are known for blending rhythm and blues with jazz to create their distinctive sounds.

The upcoming concert will feature a group of internationally recognized artists: Joy Brown (vocal), Dayna Stephens (tenor saxophone), Miki Hayama (piano), Darrell Smith (drums), and Dean Johnson (bass). The ensemble aims to explore the roots and development of American music through their performance.

Tickets for the event are priced at $36 for general admission. Stony Brook University faculty, staff, alumni, and seniors can purchase tickets for $33, while SBU students pay $18. There is also a discount available; attendees can use code JAZZ5 at checkout to receive $5 off their ticket when buying online.

This series is presented in collaboration with The Jazz Loft in Stony Brook and curated by Thomas Manuel, who is both the founder of The Jazz Loft and Stony Brook University Endowed Artist in Residence. According to organizers: “Held in collaboration with The Jazz Loft in Stony Brook and curated by its founder, musician and Stony Brook University Endowed Artist in Residence Thomas Manuel, the series is a celebration of creativity, history and artistry. It explores various facets of jazz music, with each performance offering a unique experience.”

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
