William Floyd Board of Education recognized during NYSSBA School Board Recognition Week

April Coppola President | William Floyd School District

Members of the William Floyd Board of Education have been recognized as part of School Board Recognition Week, observed from October 13 to 17, 2025. The event is designated by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) to honor school board trustees for their volunteer service.

The William Floyd Board of Education is made up of seven elected community members: April Coppola, president; Robert Taiani, vice president; and trustees Angelo Cassarino, Jennifer Heitman, Lorraine Mentz, Kevin Meyer, and Luis J. Soto. This year, the board also includes non-voting student members—seniors Nasyah Crosby, Muhammad Saad, and Andrew Winter—as part of a new state initiative designed to incorporate student perspectives into board discussions and foster leadership and civic engagement among students.

The board’s responsibilities include supporting student achievement, setting goals for the district, maintaining a healthy relationship between the school and community, managing finances responsibly, and evaluating the superintendent to promote ongoing improvement.

Kevin M. Coster, Superintendent of Schools, stated, “I am grateful to our Board of Education for their tireless efforts each and every day throughout the school year,” emphasizing their role in ensuring the district’s readiness to prepare students for success. “It takes a high-functioning Board of Education to ensure strong schools and that is exactly what we have at William Floyd.”

The community is encouraged to recognize the contributions of the William Floyd Board of Education during this week.

Is There a New Ace in Town?

The New York Mets have a new ace, and fantasy owners have been accustomed to viewing Freddy Peralta as a near-ace for some time. The move to a more pitcher-friendly park should help, but do not overreach, because the reality is that the lineup around him is roughly the same and the bullpen is likely worse at protecting his leads. Peralta has been a standout for years, and slotting him in as a high-value fantasy arm is easy. The question is just how high he should go.
