Brookhaven Supervisor Dan Panico proposes 2026 budget with focus on transparency

Daniel J. Panico Supervisor | Town of Brookhaven

Town Supervisor Dan Panico has presented the proposed 2026 budget for the Town of Brookhaven, focusing on fiscal responsibility and openness. The plan proposes a spending increase of 1.7%, which is below the state tax cap of 2%. According to the proposal, less than six cents from every tax dollar collected goes to the town government.

For the first time, the budget includes a detailed breakdown of garbage and recycling costs, allowing residents to see how much is spent on these services. The plan also allocates $4 million for preserving open spaces and reduces ambulance district taxes by 1.3%.

The proposal addresses changes at the Holtsville Ecology Animal Sanctuary, also known as the Holtsville Zoo. It calls for a gradual closure of the facility, with rescued animals being moved to an accredited sanctuary that meets care standards.

Supervisor Panico said, “This proposed budget reflects our dedication to responsible governance, environmental stewardship, and transparency for the residents of Brookhaven.”

The full document can be found on the Town of Brookhaven’s official website. Public hearings and community input sessions are planned in the coming weeks. The town board will vote on whether to approve the budget in November.
