Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has been recognized as the top hospital for pediatric care in New York State and ranked seventh nationally by Money Magazine’s 2025 Best Hospitals for Pediatric Care list. The evaluation considered over 6,000 hospitals across the United States.

Dr. William Wertheim, Executive Vice President of Stony Brook Medicine, said, “Being ranked as the top hospital for pediatric care is a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence. Our team of dedicated professionals works tirelessly to ensure that each child receives the best possible care. We are proud to lead in pediatric healthcare and meet the needs of the families we serve.”

Carol Gomes, MS, FACHE, CPHQ, Chief Executive Officer at Stony Brook University Hospital, added, “This ranking reflects the steady dedication and expertise of our entire team in providing the highest quality of care and support to our young patients and their families. We remain committed to advancing pediatric medicine and ensuring the best outcomes for our community.”

Money Magazine’s methodology began with hospitals that had received either a four- or five-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). They then used data from Denniston Data to identify high-performing doctors based on their experience with specific procedures. A unique aspect of Money’s rankings is that they also factored in overall costs into their assessment models, recognizing that healthcare expenses are a significant part of household budgets. Hospitals were scored using a Composite Ranking Score (CRS), which rewarded staff experience levels.

To qualify for consideration on Money’s specialty list for pediatric care, hospitals needed active pediatric specialists on staff. SBUH’s evaluation included data from Stony Brook Children’s Hospital (SBCH), which is Suffolk County's only children's hospital with more than 180 pediatric specialists across 30 specialties. SBCH serves as Suffolk County’s only Level 4 Regional Perinatal Center and Level 1 Regional Pediatric Trauma Center.

SBCH offers specialized programs such as the nation’s first Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center and includes centers focused on neonatal intensive care, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, healthy weight management, cystic fibrosis treatment, hematology/oncology services, cardiology programs, and an HIV/AIDS center.

Stony Brook University Hospital operates as Long Island's primary academic health center with 628 beds and functions as the region's only tertiary care facility and Regional Trauma Center. It houses several specialized institutes including heart disease treatment at Stony Brook University Heart Institute and cancer treatment at Stony Brook University Cancer Center.
