Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro has announced the completion of a major resurfacing project on Old Town Road, covering a 4.2-mile section from New York State Route 112 in Coram to New York State Route 347/Nesconset Highway in Terryville.
The project began last year and was finished in June. It included the installation of a continuous sidewalk along the entire stretch, removal and replacement of about 10,000 linear feet of concrete curb, and installation of 6,885 square feet of aprons. Additional work involved new drainage systems and retaining walls to widen the roadway where needed due to terrain conditions. The cost for these concrete and drainage improvements totaled $3.5 million.
Resurfacing was carried out overnight to reduce disruption for drivers, using more than 16,000 tons of asphalt. The total paving cost reached approximately $5.5 million, with funding support that included a $1.6-million grant from the New York State Department of Transportation.
“This project is a prime example of the Vision Zero program we are undertaking in the Town of Brookhaven,” said Losquadro, noting the program’s goal is to have no fatalities or major injuries on Town roadways by 2035. “We now have contiguous sidewalk and pedestrian and bicycle safety throughout this entire 4.2-mile corridor, which is the most heavily traveled road in our Town inventory.”
