The Brookhaven Town Department of General Services Youth Bureau Division, in collaboration with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD), will host a professional development workshop focused on grief and loss among adolescents. The event, titled "Understanding Grief and Loss in Adolescence: Challenges and Best Practices," is scheduled for August 19, 2025.
Supervisor Daniel J. Panico announced the initiative, which is funded by the Suffolk County Opioid Settlement Grant. LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman will lead the session. The workshop is designed for individuals interested in youth mental health and substance use prevention and offers 2.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to mental health professionals.
Topics to be covered include understanding the stages of grief and loss, emotion regulation, and strategies for supporting young people through healing.
The workshop will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., available both virtually via Zoom and in person at Brookhaven Town Hall at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville. A light breakfast will be provided to attendees present onsite.
