Andrea Goldsmith began her tenure as the seventh president of Stony Brook University on August 4, 2025. Goldsmith is recognized for her work in engineering and higher education, including being the first woman to serve as engineering dean at Princeton University and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Goldsmith spent several months engaging with members of the Stony Brook community across its campuses before assuming her new role. She expressed appreciation for the university’s environment, stating, “My heart is filled with absolute joy. The warmth and energy of the Stony Brook community have been both exhilarating and inspiring. I am honored to lead this extraordinary university and to build on its powerful legacy of innovation, impact, and inclusion.”

She highlighted challenges facing higher education but noted that these changes present opportunities. “While the landscape of higher education is changing rapidly, I believe these challenges open the door for bold, forward-thinking action,” she said. “Stony Brook is exceptionally positioned to thrive—driving upward mobility, groundbreaking discovery, and societal impact locally and globally.”

Goldsmith emphasized the importance of community at Stony Brook: “The students I’ve met are not only deeply grateful for the education they receive but feel a true sense of belonging,” she added. “That is a testament to the dedication of our faculty, staff, and alumni in fostering an environment where everyone can achieve their full potential.”

A native New Yorker with family ties to the state, Goldsmith recently moved into Sunwood, Stony Brook’s presidential residence. Her husband Arturo has joined her there while their children live nearby in New York City.

Looking ahead to her presidency at Stony Brook University, Goldsmith said: “I’m ready to take the helm of this outstanding university, with pride in our achievements and great ambition for the future. With purpose, joy, and gratitude, I look forward to all that lies ahead.”

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
