Suffolk County announced a performance audit of its Traffic and Parking Violations Agency (TPVA) last week.

The particular area of examination covered the agency's fines, fees and revenue allocations between January 1st, 2022, and December 31st, 2023.

Issued on July 9th, the audit's objective was to determine if TPVA properly reported revenues received to the New York State Justice Court Fund (JCF), if the latter’s distribution statements were accurately prepared, and to verify whether TPVA remitted the proper funding their way.

After thoroughly reviewing all laws, regulations, legislative resolutions, justice court handbooks, revenue databases and contracts, obtaining all obligatory financial statements and interviewing county personnel tasked with program oversight, a swift determination was made.

Across the board, the audit concluded that each entity involved acted above board and according to protocol.

Per Comptroller John Kennedy’s office, revenues collected during the audit period in question totaled $40, 597, 773.

Additional contributors to the audit include Executive Director of Auditing Services Frank Bayer, CPA; and the remainder of the audit team: Manuel Alban (Assistant Director), Thomas Macholtz (Chief Auditor), Timothy Smith (Investigative Auditor), and Jeannie Rasco (Senior Auditor).

Established on April 1st, 2013, as an arm of the Suffolk County District Court, TPVA’s mission “is to ensure the equitable adjudication of traffic violations.”

“We provide a platform where individuals can articulate their concerns, receive a judicious hearing, and collaborate on constructive resolutions,” their mission statement continues. “We are fostering a culture of transparency and contributing to safer roads through an efficient and respectful legal process."
