Stony Brook leaders recognized among City & State’s inaugural Long Island Trailblazers

Stony Brook University Associate Vice President for Government Relations Carl Mills III | SBU

Stony Brook University Associate Vice President for Government Relations Carl Mills III and Stony Brook Council Member Linda Armyn have been named to City & State’s inaugural Long Island Trailblazers list. The announcement was made on July 28.

The Long Island Trailblazers list highlights influential individuals across the region, including those in higher education, business, politics, labor, and social activism.

Mills has played a significant role in securing recent funding for Stony Brook University. His experience includes nearly 15 years working in the state Senate, which he has used to support the university’s academic, medical, and research initiatives. Mills’ responsibilities cover two campuses, four hospitals, more than 200 outpatient facilities, and the Long Island State Veterans Home. He was instrumental in obtaining $300 million for research capital projects, legislative approval for campus housing developments, and $6.5 million to establish a quantum internet testbed. Additionally, Mills contributed to positioning Stony Brook as the anchor institution for The New York Climate Exchange.

Armyn is one of ten members of the Stony Brook Council and became president and CEO of FourLeaf Federal Credit Union—formerly Bethpage Credit Union—in August 2023. She led FourLeaf through a rebranding effort intended to reflect growth and innovation for what is now the largest credit union in the Northeast and the sixteenth largest nationally. As its first female president and CEO, Armyn oversaw an increase in assets to over $13 billion and established FourLeaf Cares—a philanthropic program that invests more than $2 million annually into underserved communities. Armyn also co-chairs the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council and serves on the Long Island State Park Commission.

City & State is a media organization focused on New York’s local and state politics as well as policy matters. It offers commentary, analysis, weekly publications, daily e-briefs, events coverage, podcast interviews and other resources through its platform at https://www.cityandstateny.com/.

Others with connections to Stony Brook University were also included on this year’s Trailblazers list.

Don't Expect Bregman to Pay Off

This week, one of the bigger names in the free agency cycle signed with the Chicago Cubs, and fantasy managers everywhere sighed. Usually, anyone heading to Wrigley Field is viewed as a positive, but for Alex Bregman, more information has emerged suggesting this move could spell trouble for his fantasy outlook. Bregman is a right-handed pull hitter who previously played in two of the more favorable home parks for that profile in Houston and Boston. Both parks feature short left-field dimensions that reward pulled fly balls and help inflate power numbers.

Futures Bettors Will Be Smiling

The College Football Championship is set, and it pits two of the more unlikely teams against each other. Indiana may have the largest living alumni base in the country, with more than 800,000 graduates, but few expected the Hoosiers to reach this stage. They feature zero five-star recruits and have instead relied on depth, discipline, and consistency while dominating all season long.
