For the third consecutive year, the James V. Kavanaugh Council #5293 of the Knights of Columbus has earned the prestigious Star Council Award, the highest recognition given by the Supreme Council in Connecticut. The honor marks the end of a distinguished term for Grand Knight Frank DeNatale, who guided the Mastic-based council through another year of outstanding service to faith, family, and community.

“The Star Council Award represents excellence across four pillars—faith, community, family, and membership,” DeNatale said. “To be honored again is not about me—it’s a tribute to the 160 active brother Knights of our council who continue to serve with unity, charity, fraternity, and patriotism.”

The Star Council designation is awarded to local councils that meet or exceed benchmarks in charitable giving, community outreach, faith-based initiatives, and member recruitment. Under DeNatale’s leadership, the Kavanaugh Council demonstrated excellence across all categories.

Among their standout achievements:

  • Annual Community Barbecue: Held every August and fully catered, the free event serves more than 200 residents from the Tri-Hamlet area. Attendees are never asked for donations, though non-perishable food items are welcomed and donated to St. Jude Parish Outreach.

  • Financial Assistance: The council offers direct financial aid to local families in crisis—no questions asked.

  • Support for First Responders: Contributions have been made to local fire departments and ambulance services, reinforcing the council’s commitment to civic partnerships.

  • Holiday Gatherings: The Knights also host annual Christmas dinners for members, their families, and invited guests.
Founded in 1962, the Kavanaugh Council continues to play a vital role in the Shirley, Mastic, and Mastic Beach communities. Its efforts reflect the vision of Father Michael J. McGivney, who founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882 to support Catholic families in need.

While DeNatale is stepping down to make way for the new Grand Knight, Frank Nappi, he remains deeply committed to the council’s mission. “It’s been the honor of a lifetime,” he said. “We serve not for recognition, but to live our values and strengthen our community.”

Catholic men interested in joining the Kavanaugh Council can call 631-281-4473. For women, the council’s Columbiettes offer a parallel path of service built on the same values of faith, charity, and community involvement.
