The Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University, a key provider of skilled nursing services for veterans and their families since 1991, has initiated a significant development project. On June 13, the facility commenced construction on a new three-season recreational space designed to serve its residents and their families.
This new outdoor area is ADA-compliant and intended for social gatherings and therapeutic activities. It will feature amenities such as seating, a kitchen, a movie screen, as well as heating and cooling systems to ensure year-round usability.
Fred Sganga, executive director of LISVH, emphasized the importance of this project: “Each day we work hard to enhance the quality of life of our veterans, while honoring their sacrifice and service. For many years, renovating our courtyard has been a top priority. This much-needed space is crucial to the mental and emotional well-being of our veterans and their families.”
The renovation marks the largest outdoor project undertaken by the home and is expected to be completed in about a year. The adaptive courtyard aims to provide numerous benefits for both residents and their loved ones.
Chuck Kurtske, a resident and president of the resident council at LISVH, expressed his enthusiasm: “As a veteran, I’ve spent my life fighting for freedom, and here at the Veterans Home, freedom looks like being able to sit in the sun, hear the birds sing and share stories with my fellow residents.” He added that the renovated courtyard would offer opportunities for gardening, playing cards under the gazebo, enjoying music or holiday events, or simply walking safely with family.
LISVH continues to deliver skilled nursing care alongside adult day health care and short-term rehabilitation services to Long Island's veteran community.
