Tara L. Huston completes prestigious leadership fellowship

Tara L. Huston, MD Professor of Surgery and Dermatology | Stony Brook University

Stony Brook Surgery's Tara L. Huston, MD, has successfully completed the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Fellowship. The ELAM program is recognized as the only long-term leadership initiative in North America aimed at preparing women for executive roles within healthcare.

"Participating in the ELAM course was a transformative experience," stated Dr. Huston. "We gained invaluable insights into strategic leadership, organizational growth, and change management while working side by side with a cohort of exceptional physician leaders. The program challenged us to reflect deeply on leadership styles and helped us cultivate the strength and clarity required to lead with purpose and authenticity. ELAM equipped us with the tools and vision to drive meaningful organizational change, and I look forward to applying these skills to enhance Stony Brook Medicine."

Dr. Huston serves as a professor of surgery and dermatology in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stony Brook Medicine. She is also president of the Stony Brook Medicine Medical Staff, chair of the Renaissance School of Medicine Committee on Admissions, and president of the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons. Her Fellowship began last year as part of the 2024-2025 class, marking it as the largest in ELAM's 30-year history. Dr. Huston is noted as being the third ELAM Fellow from Stony Brook Medicine; this year, Susan Lane, MD, associate dean for faculty affairs, joins as the fourth Fellow from Stony Brook.

Dr. Huston hopes that her completion of the Fellowship alongside Dr. Lane's new beginning will pave a way for more faculty from Stony Brook Medicine to join future ELAM programs.

In addition to completing her Fellowship, Dr. Huston has been honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service.
