Rabih Chaer named chief in Stony Brook's vascular division

The Stony Brook Medicine Department of Surgery has appointed Rabih Chaer, MD, as the new chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and associate professor of surgery. Dr. Chaer transitions to this role from his previous position as chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and co-director at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

“I am honored to join the Department of Surgery and the Division of Vascular Surgery at Stony Brook,” said Dr. Chaer. “I look forward to contributing to the educational, academic and clinical mission of the institution through a multidisciplinary collaboration across different specialties. I am particularly excited about working alongside colleagues who are leaders in the field and to maintain the tradition of excellence at Stony Brook.”

Dr. Chaer is recognized internationally as a lecturer, multi-board-certified doctor, and has been acknowledged as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for a decade. His expertise includes surgery for vascular diseases such as aneurysms, carotid dissection, atherectomies, deep vein thromboses, and limb preservation. His ongoing research concentrates on aneurysm disease, venous disease, and pulmonary embolism.

As an educator in vascular surgery, Dr. Chaer led vascular training programs at the University of Pittsburgh for ten years. He has held significant roles in organizations including the Eastern Vascular Society, Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, American Venous Forum, APDVS, and the American Board of Surgery. He obtained his medical degree from the American University of Beirut with distinction conferred by charter under New York State laws; completed his general surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago; followed by a vascular surgery fellowship at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
