Stony Brook Medicine has become the first healthcare provider on Long Island to implement HeartFlow Plaque Analysis, an artificial intelligence technology designed to improve the diagnosis of heart disease. This development is part of a collaboration between Stony Brook's Division of Cardiology and Department of Radiology.
Michael Park, MD, a cardiologist at Stony Brook Medicine, highlighted the advantages of this technology: “This innovative AI technology offers comprehensive assessment of a patient’s coronary artery disease with details that were previously unattainable with standard cardiac CT.” He emphasized that it allows for a detailed understanding of cholesterol and plaque in arteries, facilitating personalized treatment plans.
Hal A. Skopicki, MD, PhD, Co-director of Stony Brook Heart Institute, expressed commitment to advancing heart disease care: “At Stony Brook Medicine, we are continuously pushing the boundaries of innovation in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of heart disease.” The technology is initially available at locations in Commack, Stony Brook, and Riverhead.
Coronary artery disease (CAD), which affects nearly half of adults in the United States, is characterized by cholesterol plaque buildup in coronary arteries. This can restrict blood flow and lead to serious events like heart attacks. Early detection and treatment are vital for improving outcomes. The HeartFlow Plaque Analysis utilizes CT scans combined with AI algorithms to create virtual maps for evaluating coronary artery plaque burden.
On Chen, MD, director at Stony Brook's Center for Advanced Lipid Management stated: “As an interventional cardiologist...the ability to detect and accurately characterize plaque at an early stage...give us a significant advantage in improving the health of our community.”
