Stony Brook University recently held a gathering to honor Interim President Richard L. McCormick for his service and leadership. The event took place in the Charles B. Wang Center lobby, attended by faculty, staff, students, and university leaders.
Braden Hosch served as the emcee of the celebration organized by Associate Vice President for Presidential Initiatives Tasheka Sutton-Young and others. It was scheduled just before the end of spring semester classes to maximize participation from the Stony Brook community.
Undergraduate Student Government President Nistha Boghra highlighted McCormick's impact on students, stating, “I’ve never met any administrator at his level be so kind and genuine to every single person that he interacts with.”
University Senate President Brenda Anderson praised McCormick's respect for shared governance and transparent communication. She remarked on his positive influence: “Interim President McCormick will be remembered for his inherent kindness and his keen intellectual curiosity.”
David Wrobel, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, noted how McCormick has brought people together at SBU: “But thank you for loving our university and reminding us to do the same, every day; to celebrate its successes and to work together to make it stronger.”
Wendy Pearson spoke about McCormick’s support for Stony Brook Southampton initiatives: “He saw the value in our work, believed, and strongly supported what we’re building.”
William Wertheim described McCormick as an empowering leader who quickly adapted to New York’s political landscape while prioritizing student needs.
Provost Carl Lejuez emphasized McCormick's role in maintaining Stony Brook’s momentum: “He has truly embraced what it means to be part of the community."
Governor Kathy Hochul sent a letter acknowledging McCormick’s contributions: "Whether through building partnerships with community leaders...you have always maintained a steady focus on doing what is necessary."
McCormick received a photo album commemorating his tenure along with a proclamation praising his leadership. In his remarks alongside Wolfie, he expressed gratitude towards the community: “It was such a gift to have one last opportunity to lead an outstanding public research university.”
McCormick will continue until Andrea Goldsmith assumes presidency on August 1. He concluded by urging Stony Brook to leverage its strengths against challenges facing higher education today.
