William Floyd High School's boys’ varsity lacrosse team secured a significant milestone under the leadership of head coach Desmond Megna, who achieved his 100th career victory. The team triumphed over Patchogue-Medford with a 10-5 scoreline. Notable contributions came from junior Marc Pluchino, who scored five goals and offered one assist, and senior Geo Alvarez, who added two goals and two assists. Post-victory, the Colonials have a 4-1 record for the season.

“Congratulations to Coach Megna on this milestone achievement,” remarked Kevin Coster, Superintendent of Schools for the William Floyd School District. He praised Coach Megna as “a highly-regarded teacher, coach, mentor and William Floyd graduate, who bleeds Floyd green. His grit and determination continue to make a difference in the lives of his students and student-athletes on a daily basis.”

In the previous year, Coach Megna received the “Mike Bowler Man of the Year” award from the Suffolk County Coaches Association. This accolade honored him for upholding integrity, kindness, and a passion for lacrosse. The award commemorates Mike Bowler, a revered coach from the Rocky Point School District who passed away in 2019.

Coach Megna expressed joy over his achievement, stating, “It means a lot to be able to win 100 games in this sport at this school.” He emphasized the reputation the team has earned for its hard work and professionalism in the sport of lacrosse, adding how proud he is to be associated with the team. He mentioned that the current season holds special significance as many players are from Moriches Elementary School, where he teaches fifth grade.

Coach Megna extended his gratitude to his coaching staff, comprised of James Lollo, Jordan Carlock, and Victor Olivero, as well as to the William Floyd Athletic Department and Superintendent Coster. He also thanked the Board of Education, the parents of his student-athletes, and colleagues at Moriches Elementary. Special thanks were reserved for his wife, Kellie Megna, and son, Greyson, for their constant support.

Looking ahead, the Colonials have an away game scheduled against Huntington on April 14 and will return home to face Brentwood on April 16.

Coach Megna and the Colonials have started the season strong, setting a promising tone for the challenges ahead.
