Stony Brook University has announced that three faculty members have been named 2024 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This prestigious honor was bestowed upon Gordon T. Taylor, Katherine B. Aubrecht, and Michael A. Bender for their significant contributions to their respective fields.
The AAAS Fellows program, established in 1874, bestows lifetime recognition on members who have made noteworthy scientific contributions, with nominations reviewed by the AAAS Council. This year, 471 scientists, engineers, and innovators have been selected as Fellows.
AAAS Chief Executive Officer Sudip S. Parikh, Ph.D., stated, “This year’s class of Fellows are the embodiment of scientific excellence and service to our communities.” Carl W. Lejuez, executive vice president and provost of Stony Brook University, remarked on the achievement, "I warmly congratulate our newest AAAS fellows for this well-deserved and impressive recognition of their work and its importance to society."
The new Fellows from Stony Brook University will join the ranks of distinguished individuals such as Maria Mitchell, Steven Chu, and Mae Jemison. They will receive recognition for their achievements at the AAAS Annual Meeting on June 7.
Gordon T. Taylor, a professor at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, is recognized for his work in microbial mediation of marine biogeochemical processes. "I am truly honored and humbled by this recognition," Taylor expressed.
Katherine B. Aubrecht, an associate professor in the department of Chemistry, is acknowledged for her efforts in advancing chemistry education. She stated, "I am grateful to be nominated and elected as an AAAS Fellow."
Michael A. Bender, who holds the John L. Hennessy Chaired Professorship in Computer Science, is honored for his work in data structures. "I am deeply honored to be recognized as an AAAS Fellow," Bender commented.
The recognition of these faculty members underscores the academic reputation of Stony Brook University in contributing to fields such as marine science, chemistry, and computer science.
