Stony Brook University's Staller Center witnessed an energetic tap performance by the Syncopated Ladies on March 14. The all-female group delivered a blend of modern choreography that captivated the audience, encouraging them to join in.
The performance celebrated sisterhood and combined dance with personal stories to inspire the audience towards education and dreams. "If you want to tap dance, you have to get good grades," said Emmy-nominated choreographer Chloé Arnold, recalling her mother's advice. Chloé chose Columbia University for her film degree while pursuing dance.
Chloé formed the Syncopated Ladies in 2003. Their accomplishments include collaborating with Beyoncé, appearing on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance, and performing on Good Morning America and at the US Open. With over 200 million viral views, their presence at Stony Brook was notable.
The theater's nearly full capacity was engaged by each stomp and shuffle. Motivational speeches and broadway-level vocals created engaging moments for the crowd.
Syndee Winters, known for playing Nala in Disney’s The Lion King and a Long Island native, energized the room by singing Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” prompting audience participation.
The show carried messages of empowerment, resilience, and breaking barriers in dance. Through their performances, they encouraged embracing passion and perseverance. "One of the most important things we are going to talk about is: don’t let anybody steal your joy," Maud Arnold stated.
