Mastic-Shirley LIRR plaza shelter receives long-awaited renovations

Neil Foley Council District 5 | Town of Brookhaven

On March 12, a dedication ceremony was held for the newly remodeled Mastic-Shirley Long Island Railroad Plaza Shelter. Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig and Suffolk County Legislator James Mazzarella attended the event, which marked the completion of long-awaited improvements to the station.

The renovations include a covered waiting area, brighter LED security lighting, security cameras, new benches, disability ramp access to the platform, new electronic signs, and Public Address equipment. These upgrades aim to enhance the experience for LIRR travelers.

Councilwoman Dunne-Kesnig expressed her satisfaction with the project: “A new station shelter was desperately needed for many, many years. I’d say it’s more than a facelift. I just hope and pray that the community and the people who come here let it stay this way.”

Town Supervisor Dan Panico has additional plans to address traffic issues in the area. He aims to persuade LIRR to create non-traffic blocking grade crossings at William Floyd Parkway and Mastic Road to alleviate significant congestion during peak hours.
