Stony Brook University recently held an Employee Appreciation Day at the Charles B. Wang Center on March 7, where over 800 staff members gathered for a morning of gratitude and engagement. The event included breakfast, giveaways, raffle drawings, and information tables, recognizing the dedication of employees and those who contributed to organizing the event.
Interim President Richard L. McCormick addressed attendees with remarks on the significant role employees play in advancing Stony Brook's mission. “Whether it’s through your commitment to uplifting the university’s reputation as a flagship institution, your investment in the health and well-being of our communities, or your innovation in research and teaching, you help Stony Brook make a difference,” he said.
Jennifer Donnelly, interim vice president of Human Resource Services, emphasized in an email invitation that this was an opportunity to celebrate staff contributions: “This is our opportunity to celebrate YOU and acknowledge the vital role you play in shaping the positive and impactful environment at Stony Brook.”
Participants were invited to visit various resource tables offering information on benefits, professional development opportunities, wellness programs, and recognition initiatives. A Wellness Space provided teas and aromatherapy body scrub-making activities.
Employees were also encouraged to take part in BeHeard, a confidential employee engagement survey set to launch on March 24. The survey aims to gather input on professional development and workplace culture. “Your input will help drive positive change,” Donnelly noted.
The Culture and Engagement table highlighted new initiatives such as the Employee Service Pin Program and Buddy/Mentor Program. Additionally, a Gratitude Grams station allowed colleagues to express appreciation for one another's efforts.
