When the history of 21st Century Center Moriches is written, the Country Cottage Diner, a fixture on Main Street for 100 years, will be a part of it. And the story of the diner can’t be told without mentioning Jill Vigliarolo, a friendly face customers have been coming to see for a quarter century.
During a busy day at the diner, Jill moves casually between tables, greeting customers by name, topping off coffees, and making sure everything is just right. It’s a rhythm she’s perfected over 25 years, and for many, she’s as much a part of the diner as the great food and the small-town ambiance.
“When you walk in and see Jill, you know your day is off to a good start,” said Mike D’Angelo of East Moriches. Another diner, Jeanette Zorn of Ronkonkoma, agreed. “She’s part of the fabric of this place. Her smiles are like hugs.”
For Jill, keeping the customers happy isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. “I love it here. I love the people,” she said. “I’ve seen kids grow up, families celebrate milestones. It’s more than serving food; it’s being part of their lives.”
That dedication has made the Center Moriches resident a pillar of the Country Cottage and a beloved community figure worthy of recognition during Women’s History Month. “She makes everyone feel welcome, and that’s why people keep coming back,” said Jack Schwartz, the Country Cottage owner.
Jill’s impact goes beyond the diner’s doors. She’s been involved in countless local fundraisers, from helping families in need to supporting community events. “She’s always the first to step up,” said her co-worker, Amy Weinhauer. “Whether it’s organizing a collection for a neighbor in trouble or just lending an ear, Jill makes this town feel like home.” Amy has been working side-by-side with Jill for eight years. “l see how the people adore her. They literally come here to see her. She brightens their day,” she said of her good friend.
A big fan is Robin Ingram from the Carpet King next door, who comes in to just sit and chat. “Jill’s the reason we are here,” Robin says. “She’s fantastic.” There are cards and greetings on the wall from her many admirers, including a plaque from B&B Tackle’s Chet Wilcox, who got his coffee from Jill for as long as anyone can remember. She drinks her own coffee from a mug that says, “This is what an awesome waitress looks like,” a gift from another longtime customer.
As Center Moriches remains true to its small-town roots, one thing remains constant—the warm, familiar presence of Jill Vigliarolo at the Country Cottage. Whether it’s a quick breakfast on a busy weekday or a leisurely Sunday brunch, customers know they’ll be greeted with kindness, laughter, and a warm smile that makes them feel right at home.
