High school medical club explores health professions at Stony Brook University

Robert Taiani Vice President | William Floyd School District

William Floyd High School Medical Club students recently visited the School of Health Professions at Stony Brook University. The visit, organized under the guidance of club advisor and science educator Terri Randall, aimed to provide students with insights into academic programs and potential career paths in health professions.

During their visit, the students were greeted by Teresa Ann Blaskopf, Academic and Student Affairs Administrator from the Office of the Dean at Stony Brook University's School of Health Technology and Management. The focus was on exploring careers in occupational therapy and EMS/paramedics.

Students participated in hands-on learning experiences, including a session in the occupational therapy lab. Here, they observed how Stony Brook students assist patients with physical limitations using specialized tools and techniques.

The field trip also included activities related to the EMS program. Students learned essential skills such as applying a tourniquet to stop bleeding and using equipment for patients experiencing cardiac events or breathing difficulties. Ms. Blaskopf provided detailed information about Stony Brook University's programs and addressed student inquiries.

Gratitude was expressed by William Floyd High School Medical Club to several individuals from Stony Brook University: Dr. Dale Coffin, chairperson of the Occupational Therapy Program; Rudolph Princi Jr., program director for EMT & Paramedic Programs; and James Deutcsh, lead instructor for EMS Programs, for their contributions during the visit.
