Stony Brook University awards $500K for AI research projects

Thirteen teams from Stony Brook University have been awarded funding through the institution's AI Seed Grant Program. This semester, these teams will share over $500,000 to advance interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence.

The selected proposals were chosen from nearly 50 submissions. The grants aim to enhance Stony Brook's work in AI by supporting technical integration into new research projects and aiding faculty in exploring AI's role in education and service.

Carl Lejuez, executive vice president and provost, expressed his pride in the university's leadership role in AI development. "Almost every day, we see a new headline about how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing society, and I’m proud to see Stony Brook taking a leadership role in helping guide and shape these developments in powerful, creative, and thoughtful ways," he stated. He added that the variety of proposals received demonstrated the university's engagement with AI challenges and opportunities.

Steve Skeina, interim director of the AI Innovation Institute (AI3) and SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, commented on the quality of submissions: “It was great to see so many exciting proposals from across the university–my only regret is that we couldn’t fund more of them.”

The program was launched in October 2024 by the Provost’s Office with support from the Office for Research and Innovation. It aims to inspire collaborations that integrate AI systems to address complex societal issues and explore new academic areas.

Further details on the winning proposals can be found on the AI Innovation Institute website in a full story by Ankita Nagpal.
