Musical 'Underground' premieres at Stony Brook Southampton's Avram Theater

Michele J. Barrett Executive Communications Officer | Stony Brook University

Stony Brook Southampton recently hosted the Long Island premiere of "Underground: Hear the Sound of Freedom" at the Avram Theater. The event included four public performances and two special shows for 600 local high school students from January 30 to February 2. Wendy Pearson, vice president for strategic initiatives and executive director of Stony Brook Southampton, described the event as a reopening of the campus for the community.

Pearson emphasized the significance of such productions, stating, “Productions like Underground reflect our commitment to revitalizing Stony Brook Southampton as a hub for education, community outreach, and cultural enrichment.” She highlighted how arts contribute to education by fostering creativity and understanding while enriching lives in East End communities.

The musical is set in 1850 and tells the story of an enslaved man's quest for freedom through the Underground Railroad. It is adapted from Akil DuPont’s acclaimed 2010 short film. Known for its score featuring Negro spirituals and melodies of freedom, it won “Best Production Winner” at the 2024 New York Theater Festival.

DuPont has gained recognition throughout his career with numerous awards in theater and film, including two Student Emmys. His work has been showcased globally across more than 60 countries. DuPont stated that his play aims to illuminate both Black history and American history. He noted, “It’s one thing to read it and to have someone tell you about it. It’s another thing, I think, to experience it.”

This marked a significant event for Avram Theater's first major theatrical performances in years. Named after Dr. Morrell “Michael” Avram and his wife Maria, long-time patrons who supported its renovation in 2007, the theater is equipped to host various artistic endeavors. The adjoining Avram Family Art Gallery currently features works by Joe Zucker that explore themes related to American slavery.

The production was presented by Stony Brook Southampton and DuPont Productions LLC with sponsorship from local organizations including Southampton Inn, Stony Brook Medicine Community Medical Group, Stony Brook University Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives (DI3), and Taste Long Island Events.
