Suffolk County authorities have announced the arrest and arraignment of three New York City men accused of stealing catalytic converters from vehicles in Suffolk County. The individuals, identified as Jose Deleon, 37, from Brooklyn, Oliver Morocho, 21, and Albert Espinal, 23, both from Queens, face charges including Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.
The alleged thefts occurred at various locations including Centereach and Wyandanch. "Catalytic converter thefts continue to be a nationwide issue," stated District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. He emphasized the county's commitment to addressing these crimes alongside law enforcement partners.
The arrests were part of a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies. "These arrests highlight the importance of law enforcement partnerships," said Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Robert Waring. Vincent F. DeMarco of the US Marshals Service also praised the teamwork involved in dismantling what he referred to as a theft ring.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder highlighted the effective cooperation between federal and local agencies in apprehending those responsible for such crimes.
The investigation revealed that on specific dates in September and October 2024, Deleon, Morocho, and Espinal allegedly traveled across county lines to commit these thefts. Surveillance footage played a crucial role in identifying them.
A search warrant executed at their residences led to the seizure of tools and other evidence related to the alleged crimes. The arraignments took place on October 17 before District Court Judge Evan Zuckerman with varying bail conditions set for each defendant.
Catalytic converters contain precious metals like palladium and platinum which make them attractive targets for thieves due to their high value.
Assistant District Attorney Blythe C. Miller is prosecuting these cases with Detective Christopher Viar leading the investigation alongside other law enforcement units.
