Guild Hall rep on Dulcé Sloan comedy act: 'She has a very special appeal'

Dulcé Sloan will show East Hampton audiences why she's called "comedy gold." | Gabriel Michael

For those who missed the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards this month, Guild Hall in East Hampton may have the next best thing. From Emmy-winning “The Daily Show,” comedian Dulcé Sloan will be tickling funny bones Saturday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m., and tickets are still available.

Though Sloan hails from the South, some of her humor centers on the transition to NYC life, which should be particularly entertaining for the Suffolk County audience, said Guild Hall’s chief creative officer, Amy Kirwin.

“She's a recognizable comedian and is still working on 'The Daily Show.' She actually won an Emmy Sunday with 'The Daily Show' so that's very exciting, and we feel that her comedy is very relatable and that people will enjoy it because she has a very special appeal,” Kirwin said.

According to a Guild Hall news release, Sloan has been dubbed “Top Comedian to Watch” in "Time Out LA" and also received rave reviews from "Variety," "Rolling Stone" and many others. Her trademark is sharp wit and honest humor with a unique take on society—like a Southern native’s perspective of the Big Apple. Millions of viewers have caught her act as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s "The Daily Show" since 2017. She also stars in animated "The Great North" with other famed funnymen like Will Forte and Jenny Slate.

On the New York connection, Kirwin said, “She does talk a little bit about moving to New York and how she hates New York but that's actually I think funny for a New Yorker to hear somebody's perspective from another place.”

While tickets were still available on Tuesday, Kirwin anticipates that Sloan’s recognizable talent will help to pack the house.

Founded in 1931 by East Hampton philanthropist Mary Woodhouse, Guild Hall strives for diversity with its performances and exhibitions, which run the gamut from a performance by Taylor Mac (known for an HBO documentary) to a World-Class Evening of Classical Guitar on Sept. 27 and Sept. 28, respectively. Additionally, Kirwin said, future audiences will get a treat with live performances simulcast from the National Theatre in England and more.

“It was founded on the principal that participation in the arts creates greater civic engagement,” Kirwin said of Guild Hall. “It was one of the first multidisciplinary centers in the country to combine museum, theater and education under one roof, and so we have been doing that since 1931. We have our museum, which is an accredited museum. We have our theater, which was just renovated... we just went through a full renovation of our whole campus, which we just finished at the end of June. So this beautiful new theater, this heightened technology is something really incredible.”

Though exhibits will not be open the night of Sloan’s comedy act, they are a big part of Guild Hall, Kirwin said, suggesting that folks might even check out an exhibit during the day, enjoy dining at an area restaurant and come back for the laughter. One such exhibit, "Julia Schnabel Selected Works from Home," is running through Sunday, Oct. 27 and features artistry via unconventional materials.

For more information and tickets visit the website at guildhall.org. The ticket price is reduced to $36-54 for members while non-members pay $40-$60. Guild Hall is located at 158 Main St.
