After weeks of critical repairs, the Smith Point Bridge is set to reopen just in time for Memorial Day weekend, bringing relief to residents, visitors and local businesses ahead of the busy summer season.
Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine announced the reopening this week, praising the efforts of crews who worked to ensure the bridge was safe and ready for travel.
“After weeks of critical repairs, we are pleased to announce that the Smith Point Bridge will reopen this week in time for Memorial Day weekend,” Romaine said.
“We thank residents, visitors and local businesses for their patience and understanding throughout this process as crews worked diligently to ensure the bridge is safe and ready for the busy summer season.”
The bridge serves as the sole vehicular access point to Smith Point County Park and the eastern end of Fire Island National Seashore, making it one of Suffolk County’s most important transportation links during the summer months.
While the existing bridge has reopened, Suffolk County is also moving forward with plans to replace the aging structure with a new state-of-the-art fixed bridge just west of the current crossing.
Originally built in 1959, the bridge has reached the end of its service life under modern engineering and safety standards.
The new 1,812-foot-long bridge will feature two travel lanes, shoulders and a protected pedestrian and bicycle path. D
esigned for a 75-year lifespan, the bridge will also offer increased marine clearance and improved storm and flood resilience.
County officials said the fixed-span design will eliminate movable parts, reducing long-term maintenance and avoiding traffic interruptions caused by bridge openings.
Construction is expected to proceed while the current bridge remains open to traffic, minimizing disruptions for motorists traveling to and from Smith Point County Park.
“We wish everyone a safe, enjoyable Memorial Day weekend and a wonderful summer at Smith Point County Park,” Romaine added.
