Cut Above the Rest: WFHS Students Excel at CTE Competition

Three William Floyd High School students demonstrated they are a cut above the rest after earning top placements at the SkillsUSA Area VI Regional Competition, held at Suffolk County Community College’s Brentwood campus.

Facing off against more than 700 students from across Long Island, the competitors showcased their technical abilities across a wide range of Career and Technical Education events, including barbering and medical assisting.

Senior Jayden Bosman captured first place in the Barbering competition, while junior Payton Bianco followed closely behind with a second-place finish, giving William Floyd a sweep of the top two spots in the category.

In Medical Assisting, senior Ciara Chicaiza also earned first place, further highlighting the school’s strong performance across disciplines.

With their success at regionals, all three students have qualified to compete at the SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference, scheduled for April 22–24 in Syracuse.

Bosman will continue in Barbering, Chicaiza in Medical Assisting, and Bianco will compete in Community Service, presenting on the barbering program’s monthly haircut initiative.

The regional competition featured students competing in categories such as Automotive Service Technology, Carpentry, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology and Prepared Speech, emphasizing both hands-on skill and professional development.

In addition to the three top finishers, 21 more William Floyd CTE students will attend the state conference to compete in their respective events, expanding the school’s presence at the next level.

School officials credited the students’ success to their commitment and the support of their instructors, including Cara Cliffe, Charlize Gonzalez, Jason McKay and Dr. Jason Holshoe.As they prepare for the state stage, the students carry not only medals, but momentum, representing William Floyd with skill, confidence and pride.
