The 5th Annual Andrew’s Top Gun Run 5K brought together community members, law enforcement, and local scouts to honor the life of Andrew McMorris, a 12-year-old Boy Scout who was killed in 2018 when a drunk driver struck his troop along the Greenbelt Trail.
The tragedy left several scouts seriously injured and deeply impacted families across Suffolk County.
“We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors, donors, friends, family, and every single runner who showed up with heart and purpose. We were truly cleared for takeoff — the weather may have been cool and crisp but it was all of you who kept our hearts warm,” organizers of Andrew’s Top Gun Run said following this year’s event at Calverton Airport.
Held on the runway at EPCAL Park in Calverton, the race reflects Andrew’s love of aviation while supporting scholarships and “Scouterships” through the Andrew McMorris Foundation and the Suffolk County Council of Boy Scouts of America.

Members of the Suffolk County Police Department showed strong support, including Officer Eric Noens, who completed the race alongside his son. Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. and members of the Sheriff’s Office also attended, joining community leaders in raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, County Executive Ed Romaine, and Riverhead Town Supervisor Timothy Halpin were also present, underscoring a united countywide commitment to public safety and prevention efforts.
For many, the event was both personal and uplifting. Participant Deanna Devon shared, “Ethan and I always love coming out to support this race each year… We had lots of fun taking part in her first ever race! She did great, especially on the turn around as we were wind blasted coming back up the runway!”
Race organizers said results and finish line videos are now available online, capturing a day defined by remembrance, resilience, and community unity.
