Bodycam Captures Dramatic Puppy Rescue in Shirley

A small dog that fell into a collapsed cesspool in the backyard of a Shirley home was rescued thanks to the quick actions of Suffolk County police officers and firefighters.

The incident occurred at a home on Concord Road, where the dog had fallen into the collapsed structure and was unable to climb out.

Seventh Precinct Officers Anthony Cardinale and John Phalen responded to the scene and worked with members of the Mastic Fire Department to safely retrieve the frightened animal.

Body camera footage captured the tense moments as the officers carefully worked to free the dog.

“All right, I’m gonna give this a shot, play it close,” one officer said as rescuers prepared their equipment. “Get free one, at least then we’ll have a little something.”

Using a ladder to reach the dog and an animal catch pole to secure it, the rescuers slowly maneuvered the small animal to safety while trying to keep it calm.

“Sorry, buddy, this might hurt a little bit,” one officer said as they carefully worked the pole around the dog to lift it from the pit.

The dog, visibly shaken but responsive, received reassurance throughout the rescue.

“Oh, it’s okay, buddy. It’s okay, my man,” an officer can be heard saying as the animal was pulled free.

During the rescue, the officers worked together to make sure the dog was safely secured. “John, you got it?” one officer asked as they coordinated the lift. “Yeah, it’s loose,” came the reply moments later.

Once out of the cesspool, the dog was checked and found to be largely unharmed aside from being shaken and extremely dirty from the ordeal. The animal was wrapped in a blanket while responders made sure it was safe.

Officials said the dog did not suffer serious injuries and was soon reunited with its owner after the rescue. What began as a dangerous situation ended with relief for both the dog and its family thanks to the coordinated efforts of police officers and firefighters.
