The Mastic Beach Satellite Branch will host its first-ever Spinnin’ Wax Vinyl Listening Party on Thursday, March 5, inviting record fans of all genres to bring a favorite album and listen together.
The library event, aimed at both collectors and casual listeners, is part of the offerings from the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library.
“Everyone will get to bring whatever record they want and get to talk a little bit about it but really the main goal is that we'll put it on the turntable and we'll listen to it,” said JD Verbeck, a full-time librarian trainee who launched the event from his own love of records.
The party runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Adult Program Room of the Mastic Beach Branch at 369 Neighborhood Road. Registration is required.
The free event is open to all, regardless of library card privileges or residency. A second party is scheduled for Thursday, April 16, also starting at 6:30 p.m.
“It’s really going to be a great experiment,” Verbeck said, noting that several parties may be planned to gauge interest in a recurring program.
Inspired by a local record store’s vinyl party, Verbeck modeled Spinnin’ Wax on the library’s “What’s on Your Nightstand?” book discussion group, where readers talk about books of their choice. In this case, records take center stage.
He also draws from his experience with a livestreaming platform, which had him spinning vinyl on camera and taking callers. Verbeck said he inherited a love of records from his father and sees their potential to bring people of all ages together.
“I think for a lot of people it feels very, very grounded. It connects them more to the music (than playlists),” he said. “There’s something nice about the physicality of owning music.”
